Accounting

CAPE Accounting is designed to provide a foundation for further study of Accounting at the pre-professional and professional levels. It also aims at equipping students with relevant competencies, attitudes and values for the world of work.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Accounting, General Proficiency, Grades I, II, III or equivalent

Accounting Unit 1 – Financial Accounting

This is a one year course which focuses on Accounting Theory, Recording and Control Systems;Preparation of Financial Statements and Financial Reporting and Interpretation. It aims at developingan understanding and appreciation of the principles of financial accounting, its application to business situations, its role as an information system and the place of Accounting in changing economic and social environments.

Accounting Unit 2 – Cost and Management

This one year course covering Costing Principles, Costing Systems, Planning and Decision Making is intended to provide an understanding of the principles and methods of Cost and Management Accounting and their application to practical business situations, and to enable students to develop the techniques of Cost and Management Accounting for planning activities, controlling operations and making decisions.

Biology

The study of this subject leads to an understanding and appreciation of the concept of life at all levels and hence to a greater respect and reverence for life. The interconnected web of life and the unique role of the human species are integral to the dynamic value of the biosphere. Students should recognize their responsibility to ensure the continuity of life in all its forms. They must use this knowledge to protect, sustain, conserve and improve the variety of life in the ecosphere. This course also prepares students for careers in biological, environmental, agricultural, medical paramedical and applied science.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Biology or Chemistry at Grades I, II, or equivalent.

Biology Unit 1 – Biomolecules, Reproduction and Genetics

This unit consists of three modules. Module 1 Cell and Molecular Biology aims at enabling students to demonstrate an understanding of the chemical structure of water, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins and their roles in living organisms, cells, the membrane structure and the mode of action of enzymes. Module 2 – Reproductive Biology should enable students to demonstrate an understanding of sexual reproduction in humans and plants. Module 3 – Genetics, Evolution and Principles of Classification explores patterns of inheritance of characteristics, biodiversity and its conservation and the genetic basis of variation and its importance in natural selection and the evolution of species.

Biology Unit 2 – Bioenergetics, Biosystems and Applications

This one-year course consists of three modules, which cover Bioenergetics; Systems Maintenance; Application of Biology. At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the processes of photosynthesis, cellular respiration, anaerobic respiration, the concept of homeostasis in the internal environment, the role of the kidneys and the nervous system on systems maintenance and the principles underlying social and preventative medicine. They should also be able to demonstrate an understanding of selected aspects of genetic engineering and an appreciation of its medical environmental, ethical and social implications.

Caribbean Studies

The Caribbean Studies Course will develop in students an appreciation for the challenges and potential of being Caribbean citizens and provide them with skills of enquiry that will foster the development of their Caribbean identity. The syllabus is interdisciplinary and comprises of three modules, Caribbean Society and Culture, Issues in Caribbean Development, and Investigating Human and Social Development in the Caribbean.

Chemistry

The CAPE Chemistry syllabus is designed to provide a coherent course of study which addresses, in addition to a specific knowledge base, the development of related skills and attitudes. It takes into account the requirements for tertiary education at regional and international institutions. The syllabus is also structured to ensure that students become aware of their moral, social and ethical responsibilities as well as the benefits intrinsic to the practical application of scientific knowledge to careers in the scientific field.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Chemistry and Mathematics, General Proficiency, Grades I or II or equivalent.

Chemistry Unit 1 – Chemical Principles and Applications I

This one year course deals with the Fundamentals in Chemistry; the Chemistry of Carbon Compounds and Analytical Methods and Separation Techniques. Students should be able to a) demonstrate an understanding that theories in Chemistry are subject to change and perform calculations involving energy changes; b) appreciate the scope and nature of carbon compounds and assess the impact of carbon based compounds on our daily lives and c) demonstrate an awareness of the wide applications of various methods of analysis and separation techniques in industry and medicine.

Chemistry Unit 2 – Chemical Principles and Application II

Kinetics and Equilibria; Chemistry of the Elements; Industry and the Environment are the modules Kinetics and Equilibria; Chemistry of the Elements; Industry and the Environment are the modules the concepts associated with reaction rates and the concepts of chemical equililibria and appreciate that principles of kinetics and equilibria can be applied to biological and industrial processes. They should also be able to use fundamental concepts to rationalize the physical and chemical properties of the elements and their compounds and appreciate the impact of man’s activities on the environment.

Communication Studies

This course focuses on the development of advanced competencies in standard English and attempts to develop an appreciation of the linguistic diversity of the Caribbean and the implications of this diversity for social, cultural and economic transactions. The role of technology in the enhancement or retardation of communication is also emphasized. The modules in the course cover the following, Gathering and Processing Information, Language and Community, Speaking and Writing.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC English A, General Proficiency, Grades I, II, III or equivalent.

Digital Media

The Digital Media area of study encompasses all the domains of learning, namely, cognitive, affective and psychomotor. The field of study covers such topics as the theory and history of digital media, the impact of digital media on society, digital media business and entrepreneurial models and elements and principles of digital design and manipulative or practical skills.

Prerequisite – Any person who has completed five years of secondary education or its equivalent should normally be able to pursue the course of study defined by the syllabus.

Econonics

A study of Economics at the CAPE level will be of benefit to students by introducing them to the philosophy, which underlines everyday economic interactions. The study will also train the student to think logically, critically and impartially on a variety of contentious issues. The training received in this discipline will allow students to transfer, successfully, knowledge and skills acquired to a range of paths for further education and serve as preparation for careers in accounting, finance, economics or law.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Mathematics, General Proficiency, Grades I, II, III or equivalent

Economics Unit 1 – Microeconomics

Methodology of Economics and Demand and Supply Analysis, Market Structure and Market Failure and Distribution Theory and Applications are the major areas covered in this course, which is designed to provide students with an understanding of some of the tools of microeconomic analysis and to develop an appreciation of the methods used in analysing economic problems.

Economics Unit 2 – Macroeconomics

This course will provide an understanding of the subject of macroeconomics and the differences between microeconomics and macroeconomics. It would also enable students to appreciate the notion of National Income accounting and the importance of these accounts for macroeconomic theory and practice. Emphasis will be placed on Models of the Macroeconomy, Macroeconomic Policy Analysis and Growth, Development and International Economic Relations.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship seeks to empower students by providing the knowledge, skills and attitudes to achieve entrepreneurial success in a variety of settings. It places emphasis on the individual’s acumen to realise opportunity, assess risk, and apply the skills necessary to transform innovative ideas into viable, sustainable ventures. The CAPE Entrepreneurship syllabus provides students with the mindset that supports creativity and innovation needed to transform ideas into ventures that create value and wealth. The syllabus seeks to fill that void in the continuum from idea generation to venture creation.

Several governments, as well as many non-governmental organisations in the region have implemented entrepreneurial initiatives which offer training, tax incentives, funding and start-up support to individuals to assist them in actualising entrepreneurial ambitions. The syllabus apprises students of ways to access these training, technical support, funding and legislative incentives.

The syllabus addresses fundamentals of entrepreneurial behaviour and thinking and engages students in practical experiences through idea generation and opportunity identification to implementing, managing and harvesting a venture. The syllabus also acquaints students with the essentials of business ownership, legal and regulatory frameworks, the importance of market research, feasibility analysis and the development of a business model in order to successfully compete in the global marketplace. The syllabus provides a good foundation for further studies in Entrepreneurship, starting and operating a venture and/or becoming an entrepreneurial employee (intrapreneur).

The syllabus is divided into two (2) Units.

Entrepreneurship Unit 1 – Entrepreneurship Theory

Entrepreneurship Unit 2 – Entrepreneurship Practice

Environment Science

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary subject, which draws on the content of several disciplines to offer a balanced scientific and holistic perspective of environmental issues. It provides the knowledge base and skills to identify, prevent and solve environmental problems and thereby prepares students for ultimate careers in diverse fields of relevance to environmental management and to sustainable development of the Caribbean Region. The CAPE syllabus presents a coherent course of study which provides specific knowledge base of the environment and which facilitates the development of related skills and attitudes. It also takes into account the requirements for tertiary education at regional and international institutions.

Prerequisite: CXC CSEC Integrated Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture Science at Grades I, II or III or equivalent.

Environmental Science Unit 1- Ecology, People and Natural Resources Use

On completion of this one year course, students should have an understanding of basic ecological concepts, the historical and geographical trends in human population growth and consumption patterns, the socio-environmental impacts related to population growth and knowledge of the renewable and non-renewable natural resources and ways of using them. The modules covered in this unit are Module 1 – Fundamental Ecological Principles, Module 2 – People and the Environment, Module 3- Sustainable Use of Natural Resources.

Environmental Science Unit 2 – Agriculture, Energy and Environmental Pollution

This course, which is one year in duration, will provide students with an understanding of the concept of agriculture as environmental manipulation, the potential environmental impacts of current agricultural systems and sustainable alternatives, the nature of energy and its use, the major types and sources of pollution and the environmental and socio-economic impacts of pollution. The three modules in this unit are Module 1 – Sustainable Agriculture, Module 2 – Sustainable Energy Use and Module 3 – Pollution of the Environment.

Green Engineering

The study of CAPE® Green Engineering will enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to sustain the natural environment. This course of study will enable students to apply Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Mathematical (STEM) principles to improve their environment at the local, regional and global levels.

The study of Green Engineering will enhance quality of life for present and future generations, while providing wealth creation through new and innovative job opportunities and other economic possibilities including entrepreneurship. By pursuing this course, students will develop twenty-first century engineering skills and ethics required for sustainable development. The syllabus is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and competencies that are required for further studies, as well as for the world of work.

Information Technology

This course is intended primarily for students who want to become aware of the scope and nature of Information Technology, master tools and techniques of Information Technology, and appreciate the usefulness of Information Technology in today’s world. Students will develop a board understanding of information systems and their uses and an awareness of the importance of Information Technology in the solutions of problems.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Information Technology Grades I, II or III or equivalent.

Literatures in English

The Caribbean experience has provided the context for a rich and varied literature which has earned a crucial place in the global family of literatures in English. The CAPE Literatures in English Syllabus aims to develop an understanding of the nature and function of literature and the methods of literary study. It seeks to encourage critical reading, interpretation, evaluation and an appreciation of, and an informed personal response to literature. On completion of the syllabus, students should understand, and be able to use the vocabulary of literary criticism and develop informed, sensitive, and balanced responses to the complexity of human nature as portrayed in literary works. It also seeks to assist in moulding the ideal Caribbean person. Such a person displays a high level of self-esteem, lives in harmony with the environment, values human life, and takes pride in our cultural heritage and diversity.

The Literatures in English syllabus comprises two Units, each containing three Modules corresponding to the three literary genres: Drama, Poetry, and Prose Fiction.

Each Unit incorporates the subject core which comprises the knowledge and understanding derived from a range of readings; concepts and skills in literary study, and related assessment objectives. The core comprises four texts drawn from a range of historical periods between 1370 and the present day. All prescribed core texts are works originally written in English. The core requires students to study, at least, the following:

(i) one play by Shakespeare;

(ii) one work of Caribbean literature;

(iii) one work of poetry;

(iv) one work of prose fiction.

Each Unit requires a study of a minimum of four texts.

Management Of Business

CAPE Management of Business Courses provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge and understanding of management principles. It equips students with the basic skills required to address managerial problems and the challenges faced by businesses and also prepares them to access management training at the tertiary level.

Management of Business Unit 1 – Management Principles and Processes

Students taking this course will develop an understanding of the integrated nature of business organisations and the environment in which they operate, and the importance of management of people. They will also develop skills to analyse cases related to problems in finance and accounting. Areas of concentration will be Business and its Environment, the Management of People and Business Finance and Accounting.

Management of Business Unit 2 – Application in Management

Production and Operations Management, Fundamentals of Marketing and Small Business Management are the modules included in this course. On completion students should understand the operations involved in the production of goods and services, the concept of marketing and its role in society, develop an awareness of the importance of productivity and quality in production and the impact of the environment on marketing. They should acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become successful entrepreneurs.

Pure Mathematics

This syllabus aims to develop in students a) mathematical thinking, understanding and creativity, b) skills in using mathematics as a tool for other disciplines, c) the ability to communicate through the use of mathematics and to use mathematics to model and solve real world problems. It would also enable students to gain access to mathematics programmes at tertiary institutions.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Mathematics, General Proficiency, Grades I or II or equivalent

Pure Mathematics Unit 1 – Algebra, Geometry and Calculus

This course covers basic Algebra and Functions; Plane Geometry and Calculus I. On completion of the course students should a) be confident in the manipulation of algebraic expressions and the solutions of equations and inequalities, b) develop the ability to manipulate and describe the behaviour of trigonomectric functions c) be able to solve trigonomectric equations, d) know the properties of the integral and differential and e) apply both integration and differentiation to the solution of real world problems.

Pure Mathematics Unit 2 – Mathematical Analysis, Matrices and Modelling

This one year course consists of three modules. Module 1 covers Calculus II; Module 2 Sequences, Series and Approximations, and Module 3 Counting, Matrices and Modelling. It will provide students with an understanding of mathematical concepts and structures, their development and relationships and enable the development of skills in the use of mathematical tools. The course will also develop in students the skills of recognizing essential aspects of concrete real world problems, formulating these problems into relevant and solvable mathematical problems and mathematical modelling.

Physics

Physics is generally regarded as the most fundamental scientific discipline. The study of Physics is necessary to explain our physical environment. This CAPE syllabus is, therefore, designed to provide a coherent course of study which addresses, in addition to specific knowledge base, the development of related skills and attitudes. It enables persons to be aware of the laws and theories of Physics that influence every aspect of their physical existence and to acquire understanding and knowledge of the technological and scientific application of Physics. The syllabus also helps to develop an understanding of the scientific process, its usefulness and its limitations.

Prerequisite – CXC CSEC Physics, General Proficiency, Grades I or II, or equivalent.

Physics Unit 1- Mechanics, Waves, Properties of Matter

This course is of one year’s duration and contains three modules. Module 1 covers Mechanics, Module 2 – Oscillations and Waves and Module 3 – Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Matter. On completion of this course the students should understand physical quantities and be able to design and carry out experiments to test relationships between physical quantities; appreciate the properties common to all waves and apply wave properties to various types of waves and should have a working knowledge of the first law of thermodynamics, be familiar with the kinetic theory of gases and the equation of state of an ideal gas and be aware of the mechanical properties of materials and their practical importance in everyday life.

Physics Unit 2 – Electromagnetism, Electronics, Atomic and Nuclear Physics

At the end of this three module course, the student should have an understanding of electrostatic phenomena and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of electromagnetic phenomena; understand the characteristics of alternating currents and their applications and demonstrate proficiency with logic gates in digital circuits and understand the structure of atoms, the concept of the nucleus, the relationship between mass and energy and the phenomenon of radioactivity and it s applications.

Sociology

Sociology is a scientific study of social interactions, social institutions, social patterns and social change of human society guided by sociological theories and methods. Caribbean society has been shaped by historical forces which have led to the emergence of several small diverse and divided societies, each unique in many respects but sharing a common history of colonialism, slavery and indentureship. Despite evidence of socio-economic transformation and the influence of globalisation, the region still maintains a distinct identity. In this regard, sociology can equip students with the necessary knowledge, orientation and skills for understanding society in general and Caribbean Society in particular.

The syllabus introduces students to theories and research methods of sociology, the sociological perspective and the processes of social structural change with specific emphasis on the development and modernisation of societies. Students will acquire a set of sociological competencies that will enable them to use the practical and problem-solving approaches to the analysis of society.

The syllabus consists of two Units, comprising three Modules
